Fridays at CodeCAD
Free Learning & Beer Sessions
CodeCAD will begin hosting free, informal learning sessions every Friday, from 3:00 – 5:00 in our Calgary training room on topics relating to our various software products, starting Feb. 10.
CAESAR users might want to find out what this CADWorx buzz is all about, for example, or you Compress users might want to have a look at PVElite.
These will be user-group type meetings, where you can learn from us, but also other users.
Non-users are welcome to join us.
We have a list of subjects in mind, but we invite you to request topics that interest you. We’ll be publishing the ongoing agenda at our website at this link: Learning_and_Beer
The Feb. 10 session will focus on CADWorx, with a review of features that seem to be unknown to many users. Following that, (subject to popular demand) we’re planning for:
- Feb. 17 - AFT Impulse, and Impulse-to-CAESAR force-time data transfer.
- Feb. 24 - CADWorx fieldPipe – converting point cloud data into intelligent models.
- March 2 - CADWorx BOM Comparisons – a cool 3rd - party utility helps you keep track of “overages” & “underages” through a project.
- March 9 - CAESAR II / CADWorx interface – what you need to know to make it work.
- March 16 - Introduction to PVElite
- March 23 - Tony Paulin will be in Calgary showing the latest PRG FEA software, PCL-Gold, FE/Pipe and NozzlePro among others. We expect this session to be quite popular, so if we over-book, we may move this session to a hotel.
These topics will likely change in timing and content, based on your requests, so if you plan to join us, please do check the web page or email/call to make sure that you know what session is happening when.
You’re welcome to just drop in unannounced, but we’re limited in space to about 24 people, so if you do know in advance that you’ll be attending, please email to let us know.
We also invite guests to participate & make presentations for those who are interested.
Software Release Schedule
Here’s what’s coming in 2012
We’ve been advised of some scheduled release dates for the upcoming versions of our various software. Please note that these are release TARGETS, and it does take some time to get the software into your hands after a release.
CAESAR II
– Version 2012 (a.k.a. 6.0): June
– Nuclear Certification Version: October
CADWorx
– Plant Professional 2013, Enhanced Piping, April
This will include the new self-aware components, new routing and new specifications. This release will be AutoCAD 2012 compatible. Here are a few videos that illustrate some of the cool new features:

Not everyone will want to use the new piping version right away, so the April release will also include an updated version of the current generation piping, with the designation:
“CADWorx Plant Professional 2012, R1.”
An AutoCAD 2013-compatible release of both versions will be available in June/July.
CADWorx fieldPipe is scheduled for a 64-bit and AutoCAD 2013 update in the last quarter of 2012.
PVElite
– Just released in December 2011.
TANK
– 2012 version: March release
AFT Fathom
– Version 8.0: First quarter of 2012
AFT Arrow
– Version 5.0: Second quarter of 2012
AFT Impulse
– Version 5.0: Third quarter of 2012
FE/Pipe & Children products
– New version just released, January 2012.

Combine Plant Pro & Equipment
By default, CADWorx Plant Professional and CADWorx Equipment are installed with their own profile, meaning they have to run in separate sessions of AutoCAD – one with a Plant drop-down menu, and the other with an Equipment drop-down Menu.
There is a way to combine both Plant and Equipment into the same profile, so you can have access to both program’s capabilities in one session.
Add the equipment module to CADWorx Plant Professional with these steps:
1) Add Equipment search path to the Plant Profile:
- C:\CADWorx 2012\equipment\support
2) Add the equipment menu with menuload:
- C:\CADWorx 2012\equipment\support
3) Modify the ACAD.rx file in CADWorx\Support folder:
- It should read: CADWorxPlant2012.arx
- sls.arx
- CADWorxEquipment2012.arx
Do this and you can use Equipment along with all the Plant Professional tools without having to open 2 sessions of CADWorx.
(Thanks to Brian Dodge of St. John’s, NF for this tip.)

“Secret” Graphics Features
Here are some little-known helpful features of the CAESAR II Hoops graphics:
-
After zooming into a model, rotating sometimes makes the model fly off the screen, when you really just want to rotate about the center of your current view. Here’s the key: the software will set the center of rotation based on the cursor location as you zoom, so if you’re over a blank region when you finish your zoom, the center of rotation will be in the wrong place. If you instead make sure that your cursor is over a component as you finish your zoom, that will set the center of rotation correctly. Just remember: if the pipe starts to fly away on rotate, just put your cursor over a pipe & do a quick up/down of your wheel-mouse (in orbit mode that is). This will reset the center of rotation, and the graphics will behave the way you expect.
- The “Triad” or XYZ compass can be used to rotate the input graphics, even when the orbit button is not active.
Using your mouse, you can click and drag this around, and your piping will follow. Also, if you click on the little gray semi-circles/quadrants of the triad, the view will change to isometric or side/top views, depending on where you click.

NozzlePro Price Change Coming
Take advantage of current pricing! (February 15th Deadline!)
With the new release of the Paulin Research Group products comes new NozzlePro pricing, increasing the stand-alone price from $2500 to $3750, and the network price from $3275 to $4500, effective Feb. 16, 2012. NozzlePro annual UMS is also going up by 50%, so if you want to extend your coverage out into 2013, you have until the end of March to do that at the ‘old’ pricing.
There is also a time-limited offer from PRG to upgrade your NozzlePro license to FE/Pipe at a reduced price. Until Feb. 29, you can upgrade your NozzlePro license to FE/Pipe for $3975 (Stand-alone) or $5270 for network.
CADWorx fieldPipe News
Many of you are familiar with the CADWorx fieldPipe software – a ‘genetically-altered’ CADWorx Plant Professional that communicates with a Leica Total Station laser measurement device to build live, intelligent, accurate, on-site 3D plant models.
With the acquisition of Intergraph by Hexagon (who own Leica), the fieldPipe software development has been moved to the ICAS office in Houston, where the other CADWorx software is written.
Developments you may not be aware of are:
- You can ADD the fieldPipe capabilities to your existing CADWorx Plant Pro license(s) for an incremental cost.
- There are now capabilities in fieldPipe for converting point-cloud data into live, intelligent, accurate 3D plant models. This software has features to accommodate imperfections in real systems, which typically make AutoCAD modeling difficult. If, for example, you have two pipes at an elbow that are not quite perpendicular, the software resolves this while other methods require a lot more time and effort.
- There is a base version and a Professional version of CADWorx fieldPipe. The Pro version includes the Total Station interface & fieldPro software (a Leica product). Both the base version and the Pro version includes tools for converting Point-Cloud data into intelligent models.
- CodeCAD can provide on-site plant surveying, with 3D AutoCAD/CADWorx and/or CAESAR II models as deliverables.
