A Brief History

Leica Geosystems was searching for an easy-to-use 3D plant design system, and selected COADE's CADWorx Plant Professional among all available products.
We agreed to provide them with the tools required to integrate their software with ours, and the result is "CADWorx fieldPipe".

Laser Precision Accuracy

CADWorx fieldPipe leverages the power
and precision of laser technology. In
conjunction with Leica’s Total Station and
Leica fieldPro, it allows users to model any
piping system with pinpoint accuracy.

Point and Shoot Component Placement

Creating CADWorx fieldPipe as-built
models is easy; set up the Total Station,
point the laser at a piping item and pick
components from the toolbar. Presto!
The component is placed in the model
at exactly that position.

Quicker and Easier As-builts

Measure, sketch and model hundreds
of piping components from only a few
locations—quickly and easily!

Improved Safety

CADWorx fieldPipe makes as-built work
safer by reducing the climbing and
clambering associated with measuring
and sketching existing piping systems.

Help with Definitions:

Leica fieldPro - A laser measurement system that lets you quickly place any type of object in a 3D AutoCAD model (doors, walls, people etc.). The desire to also place intelligent piping, steel & other plant-related components lead Leica to look to COADE to integrate fieldPro and CADWorx Plant Professional.

CADWorx Plant Professional - Our best-of-breed, AutoCAD-based plant design software.

CADWorx fieldPipe - An integrated system that includes both Leica fieldPro and CADWorx Plant Professional.

Leica Total Station - The tripod-mounted laser-measurement devices that link to a PC via USB cable & communicates directly with fieldPro & fieldPipe.

Steel, Equipment, Ducting
and Cable Trays

Comprehensive describes CADWorx
fieldPipe. It includes full steel and
equipment capabilities. (See CADWorx
Steel Professional and Productivity
Modules Fact Sheets). Ducting and cable
trays are also bundled.

Collision Checking

Built-in clash detection is included, both
from within your model and against external
reference files.

Piping Specifications

CADWorx fieldPipe includes ready-to-use
metric and imperial specifications with over
60,000 components.

Automatic Isometrics

Automatic isometrics from single or
multiple pipe runs can be created from
your CADWorx fieldPipe models.

Links to Stress Analysis and
Stress Isometrics

CADWorx fieldPipe has bi-directional links
to the world’s most widely used stress
analysis package, CAESAR II. Now you
can go directly from the field to analysis
quickly and with total accuracy.

Success Story:

TEPSCO reduces costs on cooling system expansion using CADWorx fieldPipe:

October 11/07 - Tepsco, a Houston-based engineering and contracting firm, completed a major cooling system expansion for a large hospital located in Houston’s Texas Medical Center district.
Tepsco used CADWorx fieldPipe to deliver savings in time and labor plus increased accuracy when compared to conventional approaches.  The cooling system for the 13-story project required tapping into the existing municipal/district chilled water system for the expansion’s HVAC system.
The expansion required substantial ground excavation yet had to be added without affecting or shutting down the Texas Medical Center’s 13 hospitals and 45 research facilities, the largest such complex in the world, providing five million patient visits per year.

CADWorx fieldPipe, the revolutionary product co-developed by COADE and Leica Geosystems, draws on the power and accuracy of the Leica Total Station’s laser measurement system to accurately capture dimensional information and produce intelligent as-built models of the existing plant piping and facilities, all without leaving the site.

“CADWorx fieldPipe reduced our fieldwork time, and the hot-tap points were so accurate, that we also reduced the duration of rental needed for a 10-ton temporary refrigeration unit and related work that would have typically been required under the old methods, all of which saves money for our client,” explained Homero Garcia, the program manager at Tepsco.

“The accuracy of CADWorx fieldPipe also meant that shop fabricated spools were so accurate, all we had to do was bolt them in place once they were delivered to the site, virtually eliminating field fit work,” Garcia concluded.
